Joeang, Independence Day Collection. A Story of Resilience We Carry Every Day

29 July 2026 Oemah Etnik

Every generation has its own version of struggle.

Some fought for freedom. Others fight to preserve identity, build a better future, care for their families, pursue dreams that seem impossible, or simply become a better version of themselves. Different battles, different circumstances, but the same resilience.

When we look back at Indonesia's journey, it's impossible not to admire the people who came before us. The sacrifices, courage, and determination they carried shaped the nation we live in today. Their strength was never about fighting endlessly. It was about knowing when to stand firm, when to move forward, and when to pause before rising again.

Resilience is not measured by how loud we are. It is measured by our willingness to keep going. That thought became the beginning of Joeang.

Rooted in Indonesia's Strength

Joeang takes inspiration from bamboo, a plant that has always been deeply woven into Indonesia's story. It grows naturally across the archipelago and has long been part of everyday life, traditional craftsmanship, architecture, and cultural heritage. During Indonesia's struggle for independence, bamboo also became one of the nation's most meaningful weapons. Humble in appearance yet powerful in purpose, it reminds us that strength is not always found in abundance or sophistication. Sometimes, resilience comes from making the most of what we have and standing firm through every challenge.

Just as meaningful is the way bamboo grows. Each stalk stands on its own, yet together they become remarkably strong. For generations, bamboo has symbolized resilience in Indonesia, bending beneath the heat of the sun and the force of the wind before returning upright, grounded by its roots. Its ability to endure while growing collectively reflects the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, where differences become a source of strength rather than division.

Heritage Made for Today

The story of Joeang is translated through hand-stamped Pekalongan batik featuring a bamboo motif, celebrating one of Indonesia's finest textile traditions. Rather than relying on bright patriotic colours, the collection embraces deeper, more grounded shades of red that feel timeless and effortless beyond national celebrations. White brings lightness and versatility, while black is elevated through richly textured Jepara woven fabric, adding depth and understated sophistication to the collection.

Rooted in the timeless elegance of Indonesian attire, Joeang reimagines heritage silhouettes for the modern wardrobe. Inspired by the graceful lines of the kebaya, the collection features cropped tops with distinctive front and back accents, alongside janggan-inspired necklines that subtly honour one of Indonesia's most iconic garments. OE's signature neck ruffle details add depth and character, bringing a contemporary finish to silhouettes that are both sophisticated and effortlessly wearable. The result is a collection that respects its cultural roots while naturally evolving with the women who wear it.

The Faces Behind Joeang

A collection only becomes meaningful because of the people who bring it to life. For Joeang, we found individuals whose personal journeys embody resilience in different ways. Their stories remind us that strength does not always look the same, but it always begins with purpose.

Adit Marciano has spent years behind the scenes, helping young performers discover their voices through musical theatre while continuing to pursue his own dream. Guided by faith, patience, and unwavering determination, he reminds us that some dreams are worth waiting and fighting for. His journey proves that becoming your best self often begins with choosing not to give up.

Nucha Bachri believes meaningful relationships begin with understanding. As both a mother and a daughter, she openly shares her ongoing journey of healing, self-awareness, and growth. By encouraging honest conversations around parenting, empathy, and emotional well-being, she reminds us that becoming a better parent starts with becoming more present with ourselves.

Riki Kono Basmeleh brings warmth into people's lives, often through something sweet. As a father and business owner, he believes every experience he creates should reflect the values he lives by. Deeply rooted in culture, empathy, and human connection, he continues building spaces where people can gather, connect, and create meaningful memories together.

Cindy Ozzie embraces every role she carries with confidence and intention. Through fashion and art, she has found not only a profession but also a way of living that reflects continuous growth, authenticity, and purpose. Every challenge has shaped the person she is today, allowing her to lead with kindness while inspiring others to embrace their own journey of becoming.

Although their stories are different, they are connected by one shared belief. Resilience is not about never facing failure or hardship. It is about continuing to move forward with intention, learning through every chapter, and remaining true to ourselves no matter where life takes us.

A Story to Carry Forward

At OE, we believe clothing carries more than beautiful design. It carries stories, values, and memories that stay with us long after we wear them. Joeang is our way of honouring the values that continue to shape us, inspired by bamboo, a symbol of staying grounded while always finding room to grow.

Just like bamboo, not every journey needs to be loud to leave a lasting impact. Sometimes, moving forward means staying true to who you are, embracing every chapter as it comes, and trusting that growth happens over time.

Wherever life takes you, we hope Joeang becomes part of your story, accompanying the moments that shape you along the way.
