What is Batik? A Short Introduction to Indonesian Heritage

Batik is a traditional Indonesian textile art that has been practiced for centuries and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is a wax-resist dyeing technique where patterns are drawn using malam (hot wax) before being dyed, creating detailed and meaningful textile artwork.

Traditional Batik Tools & Materials

In the batik-making process, you will work with:

• Canting: a small pen-like tool used to draw wax patterns
• Malam (wax): melted wax used to resist dye
• Fabric or canvas: the base for your artwork
• Dyes: to bring color into your design
• Wax pot tools: to keep the wax in liquid form

Each stroke in batik is intentional, slow, and deeply expressive.
